Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How long does the concrete edging last?

A: The edging will flourish many years with proper care and maintenance. We apply a commercial grade acrylic clear sealer to all edging after installation. Sealing once a year will help assure a long and upstanding life for your concrete border.

Q: How long are those pieces and where do I buy them?
A: "They" are not pieces or sections. The breaks you see approximately every 3' are expansion/control joints. Every job is poured on site using our curbing machines. All designs and colors are different.

Q: How deep do you dig and how deep is the footing?
The installer will remove the existing edging, and cut a 2 “ deep and 9-12" wide strip of sod away from the outside edge of your existing landscaping. This can be done without disturbing your existing planters. There is no footer as the curb is concrete and is its own footing.

Q: What about frost and ground movement?
The benefit of our concrete curbing is that is a continuous piece of concrete. Individual blocks or bricks will shift over time and in the winter. Our curb is fibermesh reinforced which is designed to take the place of rebar or steel and adds strength to the curb. We place control/expansion joints every 3 feet and are cut about 40% into the curb. This is designed to control the cracking of the curb during shifting periods and colder months. If the curb should crack, it should crack in the expansion joint and not be noticeable.

Q: Is the color painted or stained on the curb?
All of the colors are iron oxide pigments that are mixed into the concrete during the mixing process. The color will not flake off or disappear over time. You may experience a little fading, but this is normal in any outdoor color application. A sealer can aid in the lifetime of the color, we recommend sealing every year.

Q: What kind of base is placed under the curb?
We make sure the base under the curb is compacted and level. Sometimes we will put a small layer of sand under the curb to ensure the level of the curb. If the curb should settle a little, the expansion joints should control the cracking.

Q: Is the curb prone to cracking?

A: There is the possibility that your concrete may crack in areas other than the control joints for many different reasons. While we do everything possible to avoid cracking (such as cutting control joints, compacting soils, fibermesh, and installing the freshest concrete possible), there is still the possibility cracks may still occur. These types of cracks and cracks along the outer edges of the stamp and cracking through stamps are items that can be repaired on a time and materials basis and are not part of our standard warranty. These types of cracks are considered normal in the concrete industry, and we want to make sure you understand this risk prior to beginning your project. Your curbing will be as strong as 3000psi and will withstand your mowers weight to ride along the edge of the curbing.

Q: Will my landscaping be affected by your project work?

A: The installation of a decorative concrete edging is a “messy” process. Attempts will be made to save all surrounding landscape, however, we cannot be held responsible for lost plants. Any plants that need to be protected should be removed and replaced after the final work has been completed. Also, please be aware that there may be a fine dust that covers the plants that surround the work area. This dust will not kill your plants and will wash away after a couple of weeks.

Q. Will my colors be a perfect match?

A: Not always. In all stamped concrete work as in nature, there is going to be some color variance. In some cases the color variance will be more noticeable than others. It is important that our customers expect this color variance and are aware that it can be noticeable from time to time and that it is possible to see a darker or lighter shade of color over a large area. We color our concrete using Integral, thus the color is all the way through and not just on top. NY Edge is an established decorative concrete company using proven methods and techniques for coloring concrete. The crews are trained in the manufacturers’ recommended installation procedures to maximize the long-term performance of the products. Each step of the preparation, texturing, coloring and sealing processes is carefully executed and monitored. This watchful approach ensures that the installation is durable and that the textures and colors are as close to the desired results as possible. The coloring agents used by NY Edge in the decorative processes are not paint products. You cannot base your decision on the flat colors of a paint chart. These colors are transparent that are used for your concrete. Our materials react with the concrete to produce unique effects. Because the coloring agents are translucent, surface imperfections and inconsistencies are not covered, as they would be with paints. As with other  materials, variations in concrete are normal and to be expected. Craftsmen create the textures in an uncontrolled environment. The occurring marbling and variegations in color and occasional surface irregularities enhance the natural appearance of the finished surface. Each project is custom crafted and has unique characteristics. While NY Edge strives to deliver the requested coloring and shading variations, it makes no guarantee that the coloring agents and texture mats will produce the same uniformity and consistency of paints or tiles. We ask that you acknowledge that shading and texture differences may occur in concrete as they do in all natural materials.

ü  If possible, please mow and weedwack your lawn.

ü  Close any windows in area where new curb is being installed to avoid dust from release agents.

ü  Please turn OFF any sprinklers.

After your new curb is installed, Please wait 48 hours before mowing, watering and landscaping around new edging.

Q: What is your payment policy?

A: Standard payment terms on all our contracts include a fifty (50%) down payment at the time of the contract execution and 50% upon completion of the work. Payments can be in the form of cash, check or credit card. Any other payment schedules need prior approval and need to be stated in the contract.

Q: Do we have to use a sealer?

A: NY Edge seals all of its decorative sealer with an acrylic based sealer. This sealer has an ultra violet protectant. You should be aware of a couple of items when dealing with this sealer. First, the sealer will appear very shiny when it’s freshly applied. This will look will become less shiny and more muted after a couple of weeks and will look more natural. Secondly, as noted above, on some concrete the sealer will develop bubbling due to adverse moisture, heat or lighting conditions. These bubbles will flake up and go away in a short time. If there are still problems with the bubbles, another coat of sealer may need to be applied. Lastly, the sealer may look as though it is cloudy in places. These areas may have caught moisture or simply have too much sealer. In both cases, with time, the problem should fix itself. However, if the problem still persist it may be necessary to do some minor touch-up work.
